In this chapter the author provides practical advice for lawyers representing victims of child abuse and neglect in the District of Columbia. The chapter describes relevant court offices and procedures, contains a synopsis of the DC civil protection order statute, and reviews relevant neglect law. It also discusses practical considerations regarding failure to protect defenses and child custody strategies for lawyers representing victims of domestic violence. The chapter includes a list of various resources available for assistance with issues of domestic violence, including names and web addresses of helpful organizations.
