Abstract

The American University Journal of Gender, Social Policy & the Law is hosting a fall symposium to discuss how sexual assault allegations are currently handled and the future of sexual assault related laws, guidance, and regulations. The symposium will present two panels, the first beginning at 12:30 and the second beginning at 2:15.

The first panel is titled “Sexual Assault and Trial,” and will feature: Peter Taylor, Assistant United States Attorney; Anthony Matthews, Attorney at D.C. Public Defender Service; and the Honorable Judge Rhonda Reid-Winston. They will discuss how the criminal justice system handles sexual assault allegations, and the unique rules and practices when dealing with this subject matter. Professor Liz Lippy will moderate and provide further insight as the Assistant Director for Trial Advocacy at WCL.

The second panel is titled “Institutional Responses to Sexual Assault,” and will feature: Meaghan Root, Sexual Assault and Response Coordinator, United States Air Force; and Regina Curran, Title IX Program Officer, American University. They will discuss how their institutions (military and education) respond to sexual assault allegations and how the current political climate may affect their response in the future. WCL Professor Brenda Smith will moderate and elaborate on sexual assault issues within U.S. prisons.
