Abstract
Documents in this Section relate to the development of an independent accountability mechanism, and particularly the proposed extension of the Panel, to the IFC and MIGA. The eventual launch of the Compliance Advisor/Ombudsman (CAO) (in 1999), along with the adoption of the Performance Standards in 1997, formed the heart of IFC and MIGA’s accountability toward project-affected communities for environmental and social impact. This document is an August 15, 1997, proposal by NGOs for how the existing Panel procedures could be amended to apply effectively to the private sector.
