Abstract
PRESENTATION DESCRIPTION:
Our conception of “family violence” is too narrow. We limit family violence to violence within families — intimate partner violence, domestic violence, and child abuse. This perception of family violence fails to account for the role of violence by the state and other institutions against families. Two guiding principles can expand our lens: (1) focus on structure; and (2) center difference rather than sameness. The session will examine the consequences of our narrow view, particularly for families at the margins. The goal of the session is to foster dialogue about how broadening our conception of family violence can help us develop a fuller understanding of its causes and create solutions that end it.
