Abstract

Welcome to the 2025 Annual Meeting of the Law and Society Association! We meet in Chicago, Illinois, one of the largest cities in the U.S. Chicago is a vibrant and diverse city with deep wells of art, culture, and intellectual inquiry, along with a long history of protest and social justice activism. The city provides a fitting backdrop to an annual meeting taking place during an era of stunning social and political retrenchment. We are grateful to gather to celebrate the Association's achievements, build and renew connections among scholars and ideas, and further the power of law and society scholarship to understand and unsettle ongoing and widespread threats to democracy and equity. As is always the case, this year’s program reflects the global vitality of law and society scholarship. We welcome over 2,500 attendees who join us from more than 75 countries. We also welcome the graduate students who will take part in this meeting and in our pre-conference Graduate Student and Early Career Workshop. More than ever, we seek to foster deep discussions and challenging conversations in a broadly inclusive conference to which participants bring varied methodological, scholarly, and substantive perspectives to their explorations of law's roles in making and unmaking physical and ideological territories. We thank the Law and Society Executive Office staff without whose tireless work this annual meeting would not have been possible. We also thank the CRN organizers. As Co-Chairs of the Program Committee, we give a special thanks to our colleagues on the Committee who worked to create the Program for this year's meeting and President Michele Goodwin who brought us all together.
